I'd say maybe %10 of my printing is through IOS, however I can go months without printing as it's only when I'm dealing with something that requires a printout, like an airline that doesn't do electronic boarding passes, selling a car etc. Ubuntu 12.04 does airprint out of the box - install the printer on Ubuntu (can be shared/network printer on another machine), change the printer to shared - done. Out of pure curiosity, I think I need to try it this weekend. perhaps utilizing something like IFTTT you could send a web page to Instapaper, Readability, or Pocket and IFTTT could then spit that page out to the Dropbox folder which Automator would then print out. Only thing I can see not working would be printing from within apps or printing a web page. And you set that Dropbox folder up with an Automator action to watch it and "Print Finder Items". It just dawned on me that you could save documents, photos, screenshots, etc., to a Dropbox folder. ![]() So the lantronix print server works fine, just check the list of supported printers for automatic setup first, so you're not wasting your time wondering why it's not working.Īn idea just dawned on me, has anyone tried setting up an Automator workflow to cobble something like AirPrint together, without 3rd party solutions and works with any printer accessible to by your Mac? Once I got there, setup took 5 minutes, easy peasy. I had to download the full documentation off the lantronix website, where they had the list of supported printers for automatic setup, and directions to the webified control center (self hosted by the print server), neither of which is mentioned in the docs that come with the device. However at first it wasn't exactly clear to me why the print server wasn't working, since their easy setup docs don't mention the list of printers, and the device itself only 3 statuses based on the lights, which are basically "autonegotiating", "everything's fine", and "problem". I set up a lantronix print server on an unsupported printer, and it was easy to do using the built in web app. Just keep in mind that the auto setup only works with a specific list of printers. If you want to spend a bit of money, the Lantronix print server is great.
